Along its stunning shoreline lies one of Spain's most famous marinas, featuring over 900 docking spaces for some of the world’s most impressive yachts.

This special district is home to some of the most desired properties, known for their high prices and luxurious features.

These residences are situated in completely private and secure neighborhoods, providing a safe and tranquil environment for their residents.

One of the biggest advantages of living in Puerto Banús is the vibrant lifestyle it offers. The marina is surrounded by a variety of shops, popular restaurants and lively bars, making it an ideal spot for socializing and enjoying great food.

Right now, the marina is famous for its stylish boutiques, fine dining restaurants and stunning yachts. Puerto Banús draws visitors from across the globe who are in search of a glamorous and thrilling vacation experience.

THE FOUNDING OF PUERTO BANÚS

The concept of Puerto Banús took shape in the 1960s when local entrepreneur José Banús envisioned creating a luxury marina in the coastal town of Marbella. Recognizing the potential to draw in the rich and famous, he aimed to build a marina that could compete with those found in the French Riviera.

The Developer

José Banús Masdeu was born in 1906 in Masó, Tarragona. He left school at just fourteen to work alongside his father, who was a builder. The father-son duo eventually moved to Madrid, where they established 'Construcciones Molan y Banús.

The Architects

To bring his vision to life, Banús enlisted architect Antonio Lamela to create the initial designs for the new marina. This would mark the first marina on the Costa del Sol and the first in Spain to be funded by private investment. Lamela's designs showcased a striking semicircle consisting of six 16-story tower blocks.

Upon learning about the ambitious project, Alfonso Hohenlohe, the founder of the Marbella Club Hotel, expressed his dismay, declaring, "If this project goes ahead, I will sell my hotel and leave Marbella with all my family and friends." In an effort to resolve the tension, a meeting was arranged between him and Banús, facilitated by Monseñor Rodrigo Bocanegra.

After their discussion, Hohenlohe found common ground and decided to reach out to his preferred architect, Noldi Schreck, who was based in Mexico City. Together, they collaborated with Banús to develop a more harmonious design for the marina, preserving the essence of the area while still introducing modern elements. This partnership ultimately led to the marina being built on the site of a former fishing village, blending the charm of the old with the excitement of the new.

The result was a stunning marina that not only met Banús's vision but also respected the local culture and environment. Puerto Banús quickly became a symbol of luxury and elegance, setting the stage for its future as one of the most sought-after destinations in Marbella.

WHAT TO SEE IN PUERTO BANÚS

La Victoria Statue

One of the iconic landmarks in Puerto Banús is the impressive La Victoria statue, which stands proudly in the center of the roundabout at the coastal end of Avenida de Nacionales Unidas. This stunning piece is crafted from bronze and copper and is perched atop a 26-meter (85-foot) tall granite column. Designed by the renowned Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, La Victoria was gifted to Puerto Banús in 1994 by the Mayor of Moscow, making it a significant symbol of the area.

Dalí's Rhino Statue

At the opposite end of Avenida de Nacionales Unidas, you'll find another striking landmark:

Dalí's statue of a rhinoceros, titled Rinoceronte Vestido con Puntillas (Rhinoceros Dressed in Lace). Created by the famous artist in 1956, this whimsical sculpture draws inspiration from his film"La Aventura prodigiosa de la encajera y el rinoceronte" (The Prodigious Adventure of the Lacemaker and the Rhinoceros). Weighing in at three tons, the statue was unveiled in Puerto Banús in 2004 and adds a unique artistic flair to the area.

The Marina

Without a doubt, the main attraction in Puerto Banús is the marina itself.

With space for over 900 boats, this bustling marina is where the rich and famous— including the King of Saudi Arabia—dock their impressive yachts. Many of these luxurious vessels remain in the marina, serving as floating holiday homes for their owners.

As you stroll along the marina, you'll notice an array of luxury sports cars being driven or paraded by their owners, all set against the backdrop of numerous designer boutiques and fine dining restaurants lining the waterfront. It’s the perfect spot for people-watching and soaking in the opulent atmosphere.

Here at the marina, you can also find a statue of José Banús, the architect who helped design the town in the 1970s, as well as a harborside shrine dedicated to Nuestra Señora del Carmen** (Our Lady Carmen), the patron saint of fishing. This shrine adds a cultural touch to the marina, reminding visitors of the area's maritime heritage.

Avenida José Banús

Leading from the bus stop to the marina is Avenida José Banús, named after the town's designer. This avenue is known as Puerto Banús' "Walk of Fame" (Bulevar de Fama), where the Marbella town council has honored local individuals who have made significant contributions to the community, as well as various celebrities.
